Guest Speaker- The Transition from a Student to a Professional

Earlier this the semester, Krista Murray, a graduate in the Mohawk College Public Relations Graduate Certificate Program, came to talk to the class about her time in the program, what to expect when we start looking for jobs, and provided more insight into the field.
Krista currently holds the role of Senior Coordinator of Communications for the Canadian Cancer Society in Hamilton. She is also a member of the Advisory Committee for Mohawk’s PR program and is on the Board of the Golden Horseshoe Chapter of the IABC. Krista is very involved in the PR community and I found her drive and dedication very inspiring. She was very approachable, informative, and willing to answer any questions we had about her experience in the program and about her specific responsibilities as a Senior Coordinator of Communications.
One of the most interesting parts of Krista’s presentation was when she talked about her experience as a student in the program here at Mohawk. It was a nice feeling to know that she had been in our position once and endured all the work and put forth all the effort that we as students do. It was great to see what some of her favourite parts of the program were and how she uses the skills she developed, during the program, in her career. She also brought her portfolio for the class to look through so we could see some of the work she has done.
Working with the Canadian Cancer Society, Krista has had the chance to work on some very exciting projects. She is the Project Coordinator for the ‘Driven to Quit’ challenge and was responsible for the integrated marketing communications strategy for the Smokers' Helpline. Both projects were very successful and received lots of attention from the media. Along with a brief overview of the projects she has worked on, Krista also provided links to the websites and showed videos to allow the class to see some of the media coverage done on these projects. Her presentation was very informative and gave us a better understanding of what we will be expected of us when we enter the field. Krista was a great guest speaker who we could easily relate to and learn from.
