CPRS Mentorship experience

Tim introduced the class to CPRS, often known as the Canadian Public Relations Society, at the beginning of October. This sounded really intriguing to me as an international student who was only a month into the program and had minimal networking experience prior to this. However, Tim also invited Megan McGinnis, a current CPRS member who was also a Mohawk student. She spoke to our class about the organization and the annual mentoring program it offers. Megan's presentation was really persuasive, and I was immediately convinced to join the membership program.

If you aren’t business savvy like I was at the beginning of this semester, you might get terms like PR and HR confused. Despite the similarities in sound, the two professions are quite different, but do work together to make a company function smoothly. To explain the differences and similarities between the two, I will be comparing my experience and knowledge with public relations with my sister’s input on her profession in human resources. To begin, the two professions do share a fair bit of similarities. For example, the education for both public relations and human resources is postgraduate programs, meaning that applicants must have already graduated a post secondary establishment with either a degree or a diploma. In addition, both human resources and public relations are team-based professions. Blogging as a form of PR is becoming increasingly popular. That being said, having a space to blog on does not have to be just for the personal, it is beneficial to organizations as well. Companies can reach their audience on a whole new platform by providing updated content and allowing communications to be a two-way street.
