The Beauty of Networking

We all know someone who knows someone who knows someone, and so on. Networking is turning that line into a circle and meeting the people around you with common interests and engaging with them. But how do we get there? How do we make these connections and allow them to flourish?

For starters, your handshake. Most introductions begin with a handshake, and a strong, firm handshake shows confidence. It's a small engagement that personalizes a greeting beyond a "hello" or "nice to meet you."

Peak common interest - engage in conversation that all parties are familiar with. Most scenarios that require you to network take place in a setting where everyone's common interest on a base level will be relatively close to the same - this is the root of the conversation. From roots, you can grow and expand the conversation in order to strengthen your connections.

Leave a card - always be sure that if you can leave a business card, you do. If you exchange business cards, be sure to take down parts of your conversation and note them for later. You will need them.

After the interaction, you want to establish a further connection. Utilize the business card and the information you saved - send a follow-up email. A quick little thank you for the conversation (with reference to topics) and for taking the time to chat. This will help you stick out amongst your peers and solidify your networking abilities.

Attached are two TEDTalks with GREAT information about networking in professional environments. Hopefully upon watching you can gain more insight into the best ways to put yourself out there as you journey into your career!
