Break Through the Clutter-Stand Out on Linkedin Workshop: Insights and Reflections

I have attended an interesting workshop hosted by CPRS Hamilton Mentorship Program about Linkedin. Although I’ve been on Linkedin for two years now, but, I’ve caught very effective and interesting tips and discovered some unique features of the platform that I would like to share with everybody through PR stories @Mohawk College.

Linkedin is the most powerful social network of professionals. Have you ever wondered why?

Linkedin’s vision is to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. Their statistics shows that almost 93% of the recruiters use it to search and recruit candidates. You just need to learn how to make the best use of it.

It is a crucial tool for self branding that you do not want to miss out. There are two ways to mainly brand yourself through Linkedin. First, make your profile stands out to hunt recruiters. Second, share your story.

The most important tip for your profile part is to set up your headline and summary appropriately. The headline should tell two things. First: The action you do (e.g. teaching the next generation, or bridging students to industry) Second: Your Passion (e.g. helping business grow). The summary consists of three main parts. Your professional experience, what do you do off the clock, and what is the action you want people to take after reading your summary.

The first part speaks about itself. The second section is where you show your other soft skills. For example, volunteered while you were managing your school and part-time work shows that you posses excellent time management skills. Here comes the part that most people skip, tell the profile visitor what action he might take. For instance, “I’ll be happy to have a quick discussion and reflect on my expertise’.

Now I’ve told you about the first half of self branding, I’ll walk you through the second, share your story. Linkedin as most other platforms needs a consistent and regular involvement. Write your own experience, some thoughts, whatever you feel like it expresses your feelings. Always write based on your value proposition and don’t write what you assume people will like. Don’t got caught by the like and share pressure. Share events you are interested in, share challenges, and share accomplishments. If you maintained a weekly routine, you will eventually got noticed in the framework appropriate for your own values.

How to Effectively Get Noticed by Recruiters

  • Change your status to “actively applying”
  • Add your relevant skills. When checking a job add make sure that you add all the skills they need (if you have them) in the skills section before applying.
  • LinkedIn recently launched a skills quiz that will help you elaborate on them, take it!
  • Seek recommendations from recognizable professionals
  • Endorse others and ask for endorsement

·

Some Job Tips

  • Write your cover letter that match at least 80% of the required job
  • Utilize some of the keywords that was descried in the add, this gives more chances for your resume to be seen by a human and pass the automated scan phase
  • Reach out and ask for more information if needed
  • Follow up never hurt, you ring the bill

My last piece of  advice is get connected, get connected, and stay connected!
