On October 31st, The 2012 PR students were lucky enough to be the first to attend a television taping of the George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight show as part of the program’s annual agency trip to Toronto.
It
was great to see what happens behind the scenes at a television taping. As a class, we thought we were so smart by going on the website and
seeing who was on the show that night. We were then blindsided when we got
there and realized they tape the show in different segments, some used for that
evenings show, some used for next week and even some used a month from that
date.
We
were lucky enough to attend the show on the day that Amanda Lang was
interviewed. Lang is a journalist,
senior business correspondent for CBC News and he also co-hosts the Lang &
O’Leary Exchange. It was great that a journalist was there when we were, it was a great experience to hear from someone who has been so successful in a career we as PR practitioners are so closely related to.
For
George, the show is all about the connection. The connection he has with his
guests and also the connection he has with the people at home. He feels like he
does it better than anyone else in the business. You can tell just how important
this is to him by the way he interacts with the live audience. It was great
that he took the time to talk on us, let us know what’s going on during the taping, letting us
ask him questions and even posing for pictures after the taping was over.
I
hope a trip to the George Stroumboulopoulos show is kept in the itinerary for
the agency trip for years to come. It offers students a great insight into the
television environment and how important being comfortable with talking to media is in Public Relations.
