For Robert Plants Organization Application class we were given an assignment in which we were asked to hold a fundraiser for a certain charity! Three different charities came to our class to inform us on their work and cause. Jeff Robertson of PKD was an exceptional speaker and I knew that was the charity I would like to work for , for this assignment.
After being chosen to work in his group, our team quickly began to brainstorm ideas of what we thought would be the most efficient way to raise awareness and funds for this charity! At our meeting we all agreed that a benefit concert would be best! We set out to find local bands and facilities that would accommodate our needs ( since this was a school project our budget was non existent!). We all prepared for our first meeting with Jeff as we organized our ideas and our progress so far.
Our first meeting with Jeff went great! We met with him in the Mohawk Agency, which gave us the perfect facility to meet with him and conduct our meeting! After sharing our ideas, Jeff was just as enthused and we ended the meeting on a great note! We decided that holding a bake sale 2 weeks before the concert would help us raise awareness for the event, so our team members quickly started working away on trying to make it happen. Unfortunately, everything does not always work out as we plan in life and we quickly began to realize our ideas are not always practical.
The facility we had hoped for had raised its cost and changed the dates in which we could hold a concert daily. We went from a Wednesday evening for 4 hours to a Wednesday afternoon during common hour. Our original plan was becoming further out of reach. We then decided that we should continue with a bake sale in order to raise awareness of PKD at our college and hope to raise some funds. This idea turned out to be great and very successful!
We held the bake sale on a Friday morning at the college. Jeff was able to attend and bring us PKD t-shirts, brochures and banners. Our team donated baking and spent hours making delicious cup cakes, brownies and cookies! There was a great turn out and we were able to raise awareness as well as money for PKD!
This process helped show our team the obstacles and hard work that goes into holding an event. It was a great experience and our assignment went very well!
