Challenges facing international students studying public relations in diaspora

Public relations can be simple categorized as the strategic management of relationship between organizations and the general public through effective communication in order to achieve perfect understanding, also to realize organizational goals to serve the public interest. Meanwhile public relations as we all know is a professional course with code of ethics and conducts which helps in presenting the image of an organization or individual, majorly it helps to communicate its objectives and official views on issues of relevance particularly to the media.

International students studying public relations in diaspora are often facing different challenges that ranges from culture, home-pressure, change of weather, monetary survival, distance to home country, language barrier (accent), style of teaching, and host of other factors usually contribute to the performance of such students, because the cultural differences is far apart compare to the new environment in which they are learning.

Considering the fact that public relations is not offered in most African countries, and most students from this part of the world studying either in Europe or North America are  often confused about what the future holds for them in diaspora. The psychological and emotional trauma attached to this is usually enough to to throw such students off balance. The joy of having an opportunity to study a unique course in a western country and the respect that are often attached to such a certificate after graduation seem to always push most students from the third world countries to study a different course from what are offered back home.

The primary challenges facing the international students in other countries are not just the above-mentioned but the ''fever"  that comes after graduation from their one year post graduate certificate program which will only secure them one year ''work-permit", after this ''what is next" is the usual question they always ask themselves. Meanwhile, securing a job immediately after graduation is not really certain but solely on luck and outstanding performance. It is a known fact that, all international students without valid stay-back status ( study/work permit) are expected to go back to their various countries after the expiration of their work permit.

The fear of what and where to start from on getting back to one's country is another trauma that most international students dread so much, because leaving the chores of ones own country to come and study abroad is greatly considered as  an affluence and dignity by family members and friends, considering the amount of money involved in this pursuit of international education, friends that could not afford that luxury often get envious of such students.

Returning back home after two years in diaspora without achieving any other thing apart from western certificate and partial foreign work experience will pose a a serious challenge on such a person, because often times the corporate companies in such countries will not easily hire a graduate with a foreign certificate after evaluating the monetary involvement and base on the conclusion that, they cannot afford to pay your salary or meet your expectations. Hence the friends one leaves behind in home country will have achieved so much in two years and the fear of starting all over  again is always present and it can be very shameful to start applying for jobs that are not forthcoming, irrespective of your work experience before you left.

The disappointments and frustrations surrounding the whole event is enough to distract any international students studying in diaspora. Moreover public relations is not just a typical course that anyone can take with levity, it requires personal skills, sound knowledge and full participation, unlike some courses that are quite flexible and easy to study, attention to details and serious focus is expected before you can be referred to as a seasoned public relations professional. In a nut shell,
the daily activities of every international students either young or old are usually filled with so much thoughts and fear of failure to succeed.
