On November 8, 2013 the legendary
rat pack singer Tony Bennett came to the Hamilton Convention Centre. I was
fortunate enough to volunteer at the event and see Tony Bennett preform. My job
was to help escort guests to their tables for the evening. The evening began
with a beautiful dinner that included chicken, mashed potatoes, beef
tenderloin, vegetables, dessert and coffee. While we ate, people could go and
bid on items in the silent auction.
As the night progressed, and
everyone finished their dinners Tony Bennett’s daughter Antonia Bennett took
the stage and was the opened the show. She was very energetic and entertaining. She
was a natural talent and she got the crowd ready for her father.
Tony Bennett came on at 9:00pm
and didn’t stop singing until 10:30pm. He was unbelievable and got six standing
ovations throughout the duration of his performance. At one point he called his
daughter back on stage so they could sing a duet together. It was a lovely
sight to see. He ended the show with “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin and it took the
audience’s breath away. Once the show was over, a few people were able to go
and meet Mr. Bennett and his daughter and get their photos taken with them.
The night was a huge success and all
the money raised went directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
It was such a treat being able to see the show. Both performers are amazing.
I never would have been able to attend this
event if it wasn’t for my internship with Carmen’s banquet hall, and I never
would have gotten my internship if it wasn’t for the public relations program
and Mohawk College. The program has taught me so much and allowed me to participate
in amazing opportunities. Being a part of the public relations program has been
a real privilege and overall a great experience.
