Recently I had the opportunity to participate in the gift of
communication, I am glad I was able to participate. The event was at the
Hamilton Yacht Club; each student was assigned a charity to work with, and
given a brief prior to the event. There was also professional communicators
that attended to lend their expertize and diversify the conversation.
These are the top three benefits I received from participating:
1.) Excellent
Networking Opportunity
In the public relations industry networking is a huge
factor, we have all heard the famous saying, “its not what you know, it’s who
you know”. The Gift of Communication is
a great way to meet other professionals in the industry, each student is paired
with at least one professional communicator, and one representative from the
charity. So automatically you have planted the seed for two professional connections, there are also breaks in between and time after for even more
networking!
2.) Working
With Charities
As you
establish yourself in the community it is important to decide which charities
you are going to support. A Gift of Communication was a great way of getting to
see a handful of charities at one time, as well as, seeing what their values
are as an organization. Being able to communicate with charities gives you some
insight into how they operate, and can let you know what you may expect, if this
is the area you are interested in for your own carrier.
3.) Learning
From Communication Professionals
Working with
communication professionals is a great way to expand your knowledge and it
opens your mind up to seeing things differently. It’s also good to hear some of the things
that you will see in the industry and common practices.
Participating
in A Gift of Communication was definitely a highlight of the semester. I loved
creating new relationships and learning more about how charitable organizations
work, I am definitely looking forward to participating again and being an
active member of the International Association of Business Communicators.
