Last week we had the interesting task of creating an
infographic resume for our Print Design & Application course. It was a surprisingly
difficult challenge aimed at articulating our professional experience,
education, and skills in a communicative, legible, and direct visual format. I
have a limited background in self-taught and freelance graphic design, so the
technical challenge was not surprising. What was unexpected, however, was just
how much one’s personal brand can be improved and developed by the visual
articulation of one’s professional portfolio.
Listening to feedback from around the PR class, it was clear that
this was a very challenging assignment for many. It was one that pushed our
technical skills and redefined what our expectations of how our professional
portfolio should be presented. But, it was also a very rewarding experience. It
forced us, as a class, to reshape our personal brand and professional portfolio
in a creative and intelligent way and test our comfort levels in design and
public perception.
The application for these skills exceeds far beyond personal resumes and branding as well. It's not hard to imagine using similar skills to create presentations, promotional material, and social media posts. With the ever-increasing importance of visually stimulating design in the digital age, this exercise allowed us to focus on and develop the kind of critical and creative skills crucial for eye-catching visual design.
