Balancing Act

Coming into this program you may not know that it is all a balancing act. The Public Relations program here at Mohawk College, is currently only a three day program. Which makes it seem like you won’t be receiving a full time education. That assumption is false.

This program is designed for you as a student to be able to obtain an education, work, do an internship, and enjoy your life all at the same time. It is possible to attend all your classes, do all the assignments (and get good grades), work a part time job or two, work at an internship for one or two days a week, and control your personal life. The most important factor to all this however, is finding a balance.

As the first semester of this program is winding down, I have been able to experience a full semester of balancing work, class, internship, and life. I can say it takes some practice and adjusting but it is worth it for the experience.

I have come up with some tips that I have found after this semester in order to help you organize and manage your time in the program.

Tip #1: Time Management- you will hear this term a million times in class, and you may not think it is important to know or practice managing your time, but it is. You may not be good at managing your time at first, but this program will allow you to learn how to manage your time effectively and efficiently.

Tip #2: Priorities- you may have a million different things going on in your life but it is important to prioritize. You may have to miss events in your personal life in order to attend events that will advance your PR career. You have to decide what is important to you, and make those a priority. This also applies when you are working on homework, or assignments for your internship, and deciding what has to be done, and when. What you are working on will need to be prioritized in order for you to stay organized, which leads me to my next tip;

Tip #3: Organization- Being organized is not only important for good grades and completing assignments, but also for knowing what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, and when it needs to be done. Organization is key to being successful, at completing assignments for school, your internships, and for staying in control of your life and priorities.

This program is a wild ride. If you stay committed you will be successful. Remember manage your time, keep track of your priorities, stay organized, and have fun.
