Mohawk College PR Graduate Launches Firm

When Alley Stennett enrolled into the Public Relations (PR) Graduate Certificate program at Mohawk College in 2013, she didn’t know that it would lead her to co-found and launch her own successful firm, Kallsen & Stennett Communications.

After graduating university with a double major in psychology and political science, Stennett knew her job prospects were scarce.

“There weren’t really any other options, unless I wanted to work in parliament or become a researcher,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do something creative where I was meeting people and doing something different everyday.”

After looking at several different programs, Stennett enrolled into the PR program and never looked back.

Mohawk College’s PR Graduate Certificate program is a year long, and focuses on training students in areas like writing, media relations, crisis communications, formulating PR strategies and tactics and using technological media.

“By the time I was in the program, I knew it was the perfect fit for me,” said Stennett. “It was essentially the only way I could get to the life I wanted to lead.”

An Entrepreneurial Journey

After graduating, Stennett knew she wanted a career in PR. She also knew she wanted to stay in Hamilton, Ont.

While data from Stats Canada points to continued growth in job prospects for public relations, not all cities are overflowing with job openings.

“Hamilton doesn’t really have a ton of PR firms,” she said. “And I wanted to experience what it would be like to really work in PR.”

So, along with fellow PR graduate, Rebecca Kallsen, they co-founded Kallsen & Stennett Communications.

Since the firm’s launch in September 2014, business has been flourishing.

“We’re doing really well,” said Stennett. “The [PR] program was really helpful. It gave us experience in a lot of different areas and we’ve never come across a problem where we don’t know how to proceed.”

“It’s just really exciting to use the knowledge that we learned and apply it to real life situations."
