Want a job in public relations? Hold on tight it’s going to be a bumpy ride

Some people may believe that public relations is all about having fun or throwing parties, unfortunately those people are sadly mistaken. A class trip to Maverick PR agency in Toronto just reinforces the idea that the public relations industry is nothing but hard work and serious dedication.

“The most common misperception of pr is its parties and lunches all the time,” says Maverick owner Julie Rusciolli, “we are not Samantha Jones.”

Rusciolli opened Mavericks doors twelve years ago with the mission of setting her agency aside from all others. The idea that any information needed can be found, so what really sets an agency apart is great people and great service. Great people need to fit inside and outside Mavericks walls, making it very clear that if the fit with the team wasn’t right, you would not be an employee long. Great service emphasizing going up and above the call of duty and being able to handle a heavy work load with grace.

When starting in pr be prepared to pay your dues, have a thick skin, be a self-starter and know what is happening around you.

“If you can not name ten current cabinet ministers you might as well not even apply here,” said Mavericks first year senior consultant.

Each one of Mavericks four representatives was looking for a variety of different things from their new hires.

Be prepared to sometimes come in early and stay late or to work weekends if needed. Get ready for multi tasking and conflicting deadlines, demanding clients and important events. If you can get through all of that, you will get the perks of an interesting career, never working the same day twice and being able to meet new people every day.
